Daily 5
Daily 5 is something that you may not know about right now, but it won't be long before your child will be telling you all about it! In kindergarten we use Daily 5 as a reading structure to help your child learn to work more independently. While students are working independently my job is to pull small strategy groups and work one on one with students. This structure allows me to work with your child on their specific needs while also promoting independence and problem solving for the students who are not working with me at the moment. Daily 5 is something we will slowly introduce and will take practice, but once it is in place you will see a classroom quietly engaged in learning.
The Daily 5 consist of:
Read to Self
Read to Someone
Word Work
Work on Writing
Listen to Reading
Learning to read for the first time is such an exciting time. In kindergarten it is very important that your child is not only reading at school but at home as well. Reading with your child each night will help them to grow and become a stronger reader. As a part of Daily 5 we will be learning how to choose Good Fit Books that will help guide your child in picking a book that is going to excite them and not discourage them from reading. When finding a good fit book we follow the I-PICK rule.
I- I choose
P- Purpose (Why am I reading)
I-Interest (Do I like it)
C-Comprehension (Do I understand)
K- Know Most of the Words
